Elk River Residents Can Eat at More Restaurants Than Ever With New Ones Opening in 2025

January 31, 2025

Attracting restaurants to the region has been a key focus of the City of Elk River Economic Development. New restaurants create jobs while also improving the quality of life for residents by providing a diversity of options and enjoyable meals. Last year saw many changes and notable announcements, and the dining scene in Elk River looks bright for 2025. “We listen to the ideas and pain points of residents throughout the year,” says Josh Mollan, Economic Development Specialist for the City of Elk River. “When we hear the same request – like the recruitment of a new chicken restaurant – we adjust our priorities to meet those needs.”

Read about what’s exciting in Elk River dining and potential opportunities for the new year. Positive changes are coming to our community.

Wingstop and Tono Pizzeria + Cheesesteaks Will Open This Year

Elk River residents already have two new residents to look forward to. A Wingstop is currently under construction in Elk Park Center, and plans are in place for a Tono Pizzeria + Cheesesteaks. Both restaurants bring casual, family-friendly dining to the community. Whether you enjoy dunking your wings in blue cheese dressing or want to pick up a pizza after work, there’s something for you on the menu. Residents can also explore other dining options on the new restaurant page on the City of Elk River website. Find your nearest cafe if you need a hot cup of coffee or explore local favorites.

Elk River Has Multiple Restaurant Remodels and Re-openings

While Elk River residents have new restaurants to try, some of their favorite locations are changing. In 2023, the local McDonald’s was torn down and rebuilt to give it a more modern feel in conjunction with the expected impacts from 169 Redefine. Diners can order via kiosks for a more streamlined experience.

Another significant change is the opening of Tipsy on Main, which recently took over the former beloved Daddy-O’s Cafe space. Tipsy is filling the shoes of the retired Daddy-O’s owners with craft plates and beautifully made cocktails. The new restaurant has a kids’ menu but is also perfect for a date night out.

It’s no wonder that new businesses are seeking out Elk River. The Downtown Elk River Business Association (DERBA) recently won the 2024/25 Retail Community of the Year from Minnesota Retailers Association. The award recognizes DERBA’s “extraordinary commitment to creating a vibrant and thriving downtown,” which sets an example across Minnesota. Even small changes can make a big difference in the lives of residents.

There are Additional Plans for Growth

Even though new and delicious restaurants are opening across Elk River, there is still room for improvement in the region. With KFC closing its doors in 2022 due to MnDOT needing the parcel for upgrading the stormwater management system, Elk River needs a chicken restaurant to replace it. The Elk River EDA is working to bring a Chick-fil-A, Raising Cane’s, Popeyes, or similar options to residents as the fast-casual chicken market continues to grow.

“We are being strategic in attracting additional restaurants,” says Mollan. “We are actively meeting with decision makers and outlining opportunities for community-desired brands to expand to Elk River.” For example, the EDA attended the MNCAR Commercial Real Estate Expo in October and provided fliers highlighting the value of bringing restaurants to Elk River. With 350,000 residents within a 10-mile radius of Elk River (making Sherburne County the third-fastest growing county in Minnesota), this is a desirable place to open franchises and other store locations.

Follow the EDA as it Grows Elk River

The Elk River EDA works closely with the Elk River Area Chamber of Commerce to recruit new businesses to the area. One of its top priorities this year is to attract new restaurants that will increase customers' dining options. Keep up with the EDA’s news and updates to see how their work is coming along. Your new favorite chain might be opening in the next few years.
